Breske comes up big for Falcons

CLEVELAND - Moments after Bowling Green defeated Toledo 62-53 to secure its fourth Mid-American Conference women's basketball tournament championship in six years, the "play of the game" was shown on the jumbo high-definition screens hanging over center court at Quicken Loans Arena.UT guard Naama Shafir appeared to have a clean look at the basket for a 10-footer that could have cut into BG's 56-53 lead with just over a minute left. however, BG senior Tara Breske, who was a freshman on the last Falcons team to win a MAC tournament title in 2007, swooped into the picture and stuffed Shafir's shot attempt before proceeding to scoop up the loose basketball. The Falcons went on to score the final six points at the foul line to secure an automatic NCAA tournament bid."We came out here and did what we needed to do and came away with a championship," Breske said. "So, I'm pretty happy."The Bedford graduate ripped down a team-high nine rebounds and scored six points while also accounting for three steals and three blocks. her presence contributed to the Falcons outrebounding the Rockets 46-40 and outscoring UT 32-24 in the paint.Bowling Green coach Curt Miller thought the play of his post players, in particular, Breske, was key."For us, to battle, and again, to have the statistics like at the foul line, like the points in the paint, like the rebounds against their post game, it's a huge credit to Tara Breske and our post game collectively," said Miller, whose Falcons were 16-for-24 at the foul line compared to UT's 5 of 9.

Breske and the rest of BG's frontcourt players took it as a challenge facing Toledo's All-MAC performer Tanika Mays, who finished with a team-high 18 points but was limited to three rebounds.

Breske admitted the second time around facing the Rockets wasn't any easier than the first time when UT prevailed 66-63 at Savage Arena."They're a very physical team, inside and outside," Breske said. "We just had to come and battle because we can be a physical team, too. we put our minds to it and we can battle right back with them."Breske scored a season-high 20 in a win over Miami in the MAC quarterfinals and 13 against Akron in the semifinals which helped her earn All-MAC tournament honors. her contributions against UT were less statistical as she provided plenty of physical and mental strength ."Winning a MAC championship is an awesome thing," Breske said. "Senior year, you always want to go out big, so maybe it does mean a little more."As far as the "play of the game," Breske simply reacted to the moment."I'm just happy we got the ball back," Breske said. "She [Shafir] is their best guard and she was going for a shot and we got stuck on the screen, so I just tried to not let her get that shot up."
