Carolina Panthers 2010 NFL Draft Recap

Written April 27, 2010 by Jack Jones

Let’s take a look at the Carolina Panthers 2010 NFL Draft class and see how they came out in terms of team needs and talent. We’ll grade the Panthers on how they fared, and heading into the draft Carolina was looking for help at DT, OLB, WR, QB and DE in that order. With 10 draft picks in this year’s class, the Panthers certainly had a great opportunity to improve their team. Below we have listed which players they selected in which rounds. Panthers Draft Picks:

Round 2 (Pick 48): QB Jimmy Clausen from Notre Dame

Round 3 (Pick 14): WR Brandon LaFell from LSU

Round 3 (Pick 25): WR Armanti Edwards from Appalachian State

Round 4 (Pick 26): OLB Eric Norwood from South Carolina

Round 6 (Pick 6): DE Greg Hardy from Mississippi

Round 6 (Pick 29): WR David Gettis from Baylor

Round 6 (Pick 33): CB Jordon Pugh from Texas A&M

Round 6 (Pick 35): QB Tony Pike from Cincinnati

Round 7 (Pick 16): CB R.J. Stanford from Utah

Round 7 (Pick 42): CB Robert McClain from Connecticut

Panthers Draft Grade: (B+) – The Panthers certainly had strong needs at quarterback and receiver, and they used half their picks on those two positions. That may have been a bit extreme, but they should come away with a starter at both positions. Jimmy Clausen or Tony Pike will likely be the starter of the future for this franchise. Carolina didn’t do much to help their defense up front with the exception of Eric Norwood who is a starting-caliber player. This draft class has a boom-or-bust feel to it and the Panthers are certainly hoping for the former instead of the latter. For the most part they covered all of their needs, and apparently they aren’t as confident with their secondary as it looks like they should be on paper. For not having a first-round pick, they fared almost as good as you could expect.
