Diary of a Los Angeles Clippers Fan (Part 17)

The Los Angeles Clippers lost to the New Jersey Nets last night, 103-87.

Yup, it’s come to this, a double digit loss to the NBA’s worst team. let me add a bit of context for everyone, the New Jersey friggin’ Nets only had 3 wins coming into the game against LA and had lost 11 in a row. They were also on a 29-game losing streak against Western Conference opponents and were about to make more pathetic history with a loss to the Clippers. Allow me to quote the Associated Press recap:

“The Nets were tied with the 1993-94 Dallas Mavericks for the NBA’s worst record after 43 games and all they had to do was lose another to secure another mark in this miserable season that opened with a league-record 18 straight losses.”

Oh yeah, they were playing without their starting backcourt of Devin Harris (an All-Star last season) and Courtney Lee (who played in the Finals with Orlando). With a record before the game of 20-24, a resurgent Baron Davis, an All-Star candidate in Chris Kaman and small glimmers of hope sprinkled throughout a surprising season, the win should have been an easy one for the Clippers.

But as usual, nothing is guaranteed in Clipper Nation.

I was naturally disgusted by the loss and was clearly not alone in that sentiment, as evidenced by the comments below.

“Words can’t even describe this,” said Baron Davis, who was limited to six points in 29 minutes, with only two coming in the fourth quarter. “We’re fighting for a playoff spot and we lost to a team that’s not even close to making the playoffs,” he added. “It’s tough man.”

Clips play by play man Ralph Lawler also shared his thoughts, saying “This is humiliating. It is absolutely embarrassing.” (via ClipperBlog.com)

There’s no shortage of miserable stats from last night’s loss, so I’ll share a few. New Jersey’s 10-point lead at halftime was only the second time this season they had a double-digit lead at the break, the Clippers shot 5-19 from behind the arc, 18-28 from the free throw line and they gave up 20 points off turnovers. for shame, Clippers, for shame.

For all you masochists out there (I’m talking to you, fellow Clipper fans) here’s a great collection of videos from ClipperBlog.com chronicling the “comedy of errors” that lead to the loss. Speaking of Clipper fans, the Wall Street Journal just released a study concluding that members of Clipper Nation are “the most loyal in town. In fact, they’re the most loyal in the entire league.”

And there you have it, at least we’re loyal. In case you’re wondering why we would ever be so dedicated to a team with a history as awful as ours, I did just call us all masochists didn’t I?

“Diary of a Clippers Fan” will be published Mondays and Thursdays during the regular season.
