Let's talk some draft | Red Zone

Free agency had dominated the talk the last couple of weeks with the Chiefs signing five new players and re-signing a couple of their own. The Chiefs may not be finished in free agency, but they've already whittled their list of needs.

The offensive line looks better now with Ryan Lilja and Casey Wiegmann under contract. Sure, the Chiefs could use a left tackle who would allow them to move Branden Albert elsewhere, but the Chiefs have bigger problems now.

With Chris Chambers re-signed and Jerheme Urban in camp, the Chiefs can (finally!) send out three NFL caliber players when they go to a three-wide receiver formation. And Thomas Jones solves the dilemma of how to go about getting some R & R for Jamaal Charles.

Sure, the Chiefs could still use some offensive upgrades, but they could take the field and be more formidable with the ball now than they were last season.

Defensively? Not so. When all you've done as far as personnel is add Shaun Smith to the league's 30th-ranked defense, you've got some work to do.

Which brings us to the draft. The Chiefs have three picks in the first two rounds and that first one, fifth overall, is looking more and more as if it will go for defensive help. A pass rusher, perhaps Derrick Morgan or Sergio Kindle, makes a lot of sense. Safety Eric Berry does, too.

Whatever they do, it almost has to be defense. And for their sake, he must give them more impact than their number one pick did last year.
