Seattle Sounders edge Chelsea to win soccer championship

Just before time expired, Mikaela Rodriguez scored the winner as the Seattle Sounders edged Chelsea 1-0 for the championship in under-12 girls during Cooper City Optimist SoccerFest at the Cooper City Sports Complex.

As time was running out in regulation, Rodriguez's corner kick was blocked with the ball rebounding toward her. Rodriguez then stepped up and hooked a shot into the upper far post, before the whistle blew, and the Sounders celebrated, avoiding overtime.

Sounders keeper Sabrina Hebding made two big saves in the fourth quarter to keep things scoreless.

the Sounders handed a stellar Chelsea team its only loss this season.

the Cooper City Premier under-15 girls' travel soccer team, playing in the very competitive Florida State League, finished second in the regular season, going undefeated. the team also went undefeated and placed second in the Premier Division of the Weston Cup Presidents' Day Holiday Tournament.

in its sixth year, the team is coached by Chico Moss, mark Wykle and Chris Auld and trained by Phil Zayas.

the Pompano Hammerheads 3 v 3 Soccer Challenge is March 27 at Brian Piccolo Park, 9501 Sheridan St., Pembroke Pines.

Teams that pay the entry fee by midnight Thursday will receive a $30 discount. Entries will be accepted through March 22.

Boys and girls in age divisions under-6 through adult are eligible, and each team is guaranteed a minimum of four games with players receiving souvenir tournament T-shirts.

Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded to each player on the first-, second- and third-place teams. those in the under-10 and younger divisions who do not finish in the top three will receive participation medals.

the top four teams in each division will qualify for the Challenge 3 v 3 National Championships July 29-Aug. 1 at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista.
