Setting up workout space at home can work just as well as going to gym

If scheduling and distance are holding you back from getting to a gym to work out, there are still plenty of ways to get in shape at home. If the equipment is in your house, there's less room for excuses.

Jimmy Kriz, general manager of Fitness Showrooms in Poughkeepsie, said people should start with basic pieces of equipment that cover both aerobic and anaerobic health.

"The basics are treadmills, exercise bikes and home gyms, or dumbbells," Kriz said. "To get started on a perfect cycle, you need some kind of cardio equipment, whether it's a triad, elliptical or bike, combined with some anaerobic activity , such as weight training."

Fitness Showrooms provides both commercial and residential equipment, and performs on-site consultation. It also has a service department for repairs.

Thia Tarrab, who runs Northeast Athletic Club in Millerton, started getting in shape with walking, in addition to changing her diet, a little over two years ago.

"I weighed over 200 pounds, and I just didn't like me anymore, and I decided to make a change and eat differently, and incorporating exercises kept me going from there," she said.

Tarrab said she was bitten by the fitness bug, and it became her lifestyle. Her fitness kick led her to become an in-home personal trainer, and later to her current position at the gym in Millerton.

While sticking to an at-home routine can be difficult, Tarrab said it's possible as long as you create a schedule and stick to it.

She said she was lucky when she started because her kids were teenagers by that point and had their own schedules going on. For those who have to worry about driving the kids around and running all sorts of other errands, it could be more of a challenge.

"Sit down with a blotter or a calendar and write down your schedule: 'I'm (going to) work out Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 11 in the morning,' " she said. "So when you get that phone call, saying, 'Please pick this up for me at this time, or be at this place on this day,' you know that hour is committed to you, and you don't schedule stuff."
