Carver Girls Softball sign-ups

Carver Girls Softball will hold sign-ups for the 2010 season at the Carver Public Library from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 13.

Carver Girls Softball is accepting registrations for the 2010 softball season. Registration and medical forms for the upcoming season can be found by visiting the Web site at carvergirlssoftball.com. Feel free to download both forms and send them with the registration fee to: Carver Girls Softball, P.O. Box 1101, Carver, MA 02330. Registration fees for the 2010 season are: Kindergarten (Learn to Play) $45; Grades 1-2 $45; Grades 3-5 $65; Grades 6-8 $65.

Player evaluations for girls in grades 3-8 will be held in the Carver High School gym, Saturday, March 20. Player evaluations are not needed for girls in grades kindergarten through second. Check the Web site for all grade evaluations times.

Gateway Babe Ruth registration

Gateway Babe Ruth is accepting online registrations for the 2010 baseball season. Players living in the towns of Carver, Marion, Mattapoisett, Rochester and Wareham who will be 13, 14 or 15 years of age before may 1, are eligible to play. to download registration forms go to gatewaybaberuth.org. HALIFAX

SLHS Baseball and Halifax Youth Baseball to hold pitching and hitting clinic

The Silver Lake High School baseball program and Halifax Youth Baseball will be holding a pitching and hitting clinic, Saturday, March 13 and Sunday, March 21 in the Silver Lake High School gymnasium. The clinic will be divided into two age groups that participate in a two-hour session (from 10 a.m. to noon, and from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.) each day. The clinic director is Silver Lake High School head baseball coach Kenny Tocci, who is now in his fifth season as head coach for the Lakers. Members of Lakers coaching staff and team players will oversee all drills and instruction.

Players aged 7-10 will attend the first session, from 10 a.m. to noon. Players aged 11-14 will attend the second session, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The March 13 session will focus entirely on hitting while the March 21 session will concentrate on pitching and catching. no current high school students are eligible to participate.

The clinic fee is $40. each session will be limited to 40 players. to receive a clinic brochure and an application with further information, go to the Halifax Youth Baseball Web site eteamz.com/Halifaxbaseball. The brochure will be under Handouts.

For the 2010 season Silver Lake Football is trying to expand the youth program with additional age appropriate teams. Currently, the program consist of four playing levels, Mighty Mites, Mites, Pee-wees and Midgets. if the right number of applicants registers, the 9-year-olds (Mites), 11-year-olds (Peewees), and 13/14-year-olds (Midgets) will continue to play an OCYFL division 2 schedule. This will include teams from Taunton, Hanover, Dennis Yarmouth, Duxbury and Middleboro. Silver Lake Football is looking to have the 8-year-olds (Mites), 10-year-olds (Peewees), and 12-year-olds (Midgets) play in a division 5 schedule. This will include towns from Hanover, Hingham, Taunton, Duxbury, Bridgewater, Marshfield and Scituate. these additional teams will create a competitive (Varsity) and non-competitive (Junior Varsity) schedule for every age appropriate team within the program. The 7-year-olds (Mighty Mites) will remain a non-competitive instructional level.

SLYF is hoping by separating teams by single age brackets, made of Varsity and Junior Varsity players for each age group bracket listed below, will create more playing time for the kids each weekend. This is all dependent on the number of per age level applicants received; if there is not the right number of applicants Silver Lake Football will be unable to create additional teams. Halifax Girls Softball 2010 registration

Halifax Girls Softball will begin registration this week as forms were sent home from school (K-6). Forms can be mailed to Halifax Girls Softball at PO Box 530, Halifax, MA 02338, dropped off at John & Son’s Barbershop or brought to the Halifax Elementary School gym on the following dates/times: from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 6. Slight adjustments to some age groups have been made, so read the registration form carefully. The registration deadlines of March 15 for 10U and 12U, and April 1 for senior (eighth-12th grades) will be strictly enforced this year. Copies of the registration form, along with more information on the age adjustments, can be found on the Halifax Girls Softball League Web site, eteamz.com/halifaxgirlssoftball.

Kingfish Swim Team

Kingfish Swimming offers swimmers an opportunity to compete on a United States Swim team and be challenged to a new level. Headed by Jay Craft, former Olympic Trials swimmer and NCAA Division 1 All American, the USS team provides all levels of swimming, from dual meets and state competitions to the United States Olympic Trials. Craft and his staff provide opportunities for swimmers at all levels to train and compete year round. Participants travel to large meets and compete all throughout new England. Little League Battery Club

Additional Battery Club sessions will be held March 27-April 17 for 8 to 12 years olds. Pitching instruction will concentrate on proper mechanics from the wind-up and stretch, strategy and pitch selection, different grips and its effects on the ball, pick-off moves, fielding, and positive attitude. Catching sessions focus on correct receiving and throwing techniques, pitch selection, blocking low pitches, and overall strategy.

Group size is limited in order to provide personalized instruction.

Register for Pan-Mass Challenge

Online registration has begun for the 31st annual Pan-Massachusetts Challenge. Log on to pmc.org to register to ride. Open to 5,500 cyclists, the PMC will be held Aug. 7 and 8. This year’s goal is to raise $31 million for the Jimmy Fund, which supports cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Riders can register for one of 10 routes, including four one-day and seven two-day treks, which range from 47 to 190 miles. Minimum fundraising requirements range from $1,000 to $4,200, depending on the route chosen. Registration cost is $125 or $170 depending on the route chosen. Support services, meals and overnight accommodations will be provided. Log on to the site or call 800-WE-CYCLE for information.

Special Olympics

Plymouth Special Olympics is a year-round program of sports training and competition in a variety of sports for individuals with developmental disabilities. Tiny Blades

Tiny Blades is a Learn to Skate program for children 2-1/2 to 5 years old at Armstrong Arena, 103 Long Pond Road, Plymouth. Class time is 25 minutes with a class size of four to seven skaters per instructor. each skater will receive an ISI Registration Card, a WeSkate Booklet describing the skills the skater will be learning, stickers for their booklet and a newsletter with tips and games relating to skating. in Plymouth, tiny Blades classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1 p.m.; and Wednesdays and Fridays at 9:30 a.m. For information on the tiny Blades program or beginning through adult skating, visit FMCArenas.com and click on skating programs.

Junior Olympic Archery Development Program

The Monument Beach Sportsman’s Club is accepting applications for enrollment in its Junior Olympic Archery Development Program. The JOAD Program is open to member and non-member youth ages 8-18 (male and female). The program is intended to provide the necessary guidance for the recreational archer who may be interested in archery for their enjoyment of shooting a bow and arrow. JOAD is also an achievement program consisting of qualifying rounds and achievement levels designed to provide a challenge for youth in archery achievement. Classes are held Monday and Tuesday evenings from 7 to 8 pm. The cost to join MBSC’s JOAD program is $50 and includes eight lessons. Lessons are on an as-used basis. if an archer misses a class there is no charge for the evening missed. All archery equipment and accessories are provided by the Monument Beach Sportsman’s Club. The indoor archery range is open to club members 24/7, and is open to the general public Thursday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. for $2. The club also sports a world-class outdoor 3D range on its 65-acre property in Bourne. Wahoos swim team

The Wahoos developmental swim team is open to all swimmers ages 7-16 who have reached American Red Cross swim level 5 or the equivalent. The head coach this year is Joe Smith, who has an extensive coaching history in Virginia, with the Cape Cod Swim Club, SCS Masters program and Sandwich High School. The swim team is part of the Southeastern Massachusetts Swim League, which hosts six other teams in the South Shore area. there are no extra fees for the meets, relay carnivals or sprint meets that are held during the league’s season. The team meets for practice from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays; and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturdays at the Sandwich Community School pool. Pilgrim Skating Club

The Pilgrim Skating Club’s Synchronized Skating Team is a group of eight figure skaters aged 6-12 all skating on the ice at the same time. they work together as one unit and perform a program set to music. The emphasis is on having fun while learning and building on the basic skills of synchro skating. The team practices from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursdays at Armstrong Arena in Plymouth and will participate in four to five competitions throughout new England during the season. The team ended their season last year with a gold medal at their last competition in Connecticut. The team is seeking new members, boys and girls aged 6-12, who may be interested in joining their beginner level II synchro team. For more information call coach Margot Marino at 508-746-2561.
